An Interview With Running on Empty

Words by Hadiyyah Kuma

Running on Empty is an up and coming band with big dreams. The band features Gavin Valladares on drums, Ripley Conklin on rhythm guitar, Anthony Laurie on lead guitar, Katie Kissler on bass, and Hope Wilburn as a vocalist. Their tastes are just as eclectic as the music itself. I asked Gavin about the members' favourite albums of 2018, and here are the results:

Gavin - I by Coffin

Anthony - Grimmest Hits by Black Label Society

Ripley - Couldn’t name an album, but enjoyed the single, “All Out Life” by Slipknot

Katie - A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships by The 1975

Hope - Little Dark Age by MGMT

Just like their tastes in albums, Running on Empty’s music is a fusion of genres and draws inspiration from rock, funk, alternative, indie, and metal. Like many bands in the underground music scene, Running on Empty is out to break the barriers of genre and exude the messages of their time. They are currently working on their second single, and once they’ve released that, the members will be focused on curating their first full-length album.

Our inspiration for these projects and music as a whole is that we aren’t satisfied in just being another group of teenagers who decide they want to “be in a band.”

They are passionate about working hard to create music that makes people happy. As drummer Gavin says, “Our inspiration for these projects and music as a whole is that we aren’t satisfied in just being another group of teenagers who decide they want to “be in a band.” We want to have careers in the music industry and if possible, grow our band to be well known! We love seeing people’s reactions at our shows when they hear us play and how happy they are to come to more shows afterwards.” They really take their career seriously and want to break the mold of modern society to create something worth listening to. But the bands dreams are not just dreams; they’re actively working to make it happen for them. They’ve played at a high school rally for over two thousand people. In five years they hope to be touring the United States. “As artists,” says Gavin, “we want to create high quality music that our friends and listeners can enjoy at any time."

We also asked Running on Empty about their creative process and Gavin explained it like this: “Usually someone will come up with a riff and then we proceed to developing the riff and adding drum and bass parts. Lastly, we fit the vocals to match the mood of the song and be meaningful to us personally.” Their first single, "Dirty Campaigns" is certainly telling of their ability to create a dynamic and catchy tune, and you can listen to it now on major streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. We're excited to see what's next for this band.
